1818 Mikołaj Wachowski and Marianna Szulc TRANSLATION of Bann and Marriage Document
Gromada is a Polish word meaning "gathering", "Group" or "Assembly." The term referred to a village organization which embraced all the inhabitants of a village and acted as a local authority, as well as overseeing tax payments. Their chiefs took the title of "soltys" and were elected by the local population. The term "Gromeda" probably comes from the German word for Community, hence the term "Commune" which is used in the translation of this document.
